Jessica and Kayla Fenech to Play Themselves in FENECH
There are some casting decisions you make because they are smart.
There are others you make because they are authentic.
And every now and then, you get the rare opportunity to make a decision that is both.
That is exactly how I feel about officially bringing Jessica Fenech and Kayla Fenech on board to play themselves in FENECH – The Jeff Fenech Story.
From the very beginning, this film has always been about far more than boxing. Yes, Jeff Fenech is one of the greatest fighters this country has ever produced. Yes, his story inside the ring is one of grit, power, sacrifice and greatness. But what has always hit me the hardest about Jeff’s life is not just what he achieved as a fighter — it’s who he is as a man, as a father, and as the heart of a family that has stood together through everything.
The Fenechs are a strong family unit. A truly strong one.
That kind of strength cannot be faked. It cannot be manufactured for a screen test. It comes from years of standing by one another, loving one another, fighting for one another, and showing up for each other when life gets hard. And Jeff’s life has certainly had its share of hard moments.
One of the most emotional moments we explore in this film is when Jeff was in hospital, in a frightening and deeply vulnerable state, and Jessica made the beautiful decision to bring her wedding to Jeff’s bedside. It is one of those moments in life that says everything about a family without needing to say much at all. It speaks to love, loyalty, urgency, heartbreak, and the kind of bond that only families like the Fenechs truly understand.
It is a profoundly moving part of this story, and when I thought about how to portray both Jessica and Kayla in the film, the answer became clearer and clearer to me.
Why cast someone else to imitate them when the truth is standing right there?
In the part of Jeff’s story where we see Jessica and Kayla, they are close to the age they are now. They know this life. They have lived this life. They have seen first-hand what Jeff’s world has looked like behind closed doors — the highs, the chaos, the love, the humour, the challenges, the loyalty, and the madness that comes with being part of such a passionate and tightly connected family.
That kind of insight is priceless.
Over these past months, I’ve had the privilege of getting to know both Jessie and Kayla more closely, and the more time I spent around them, the more I knew they could do a fantastic job in this film. Not just because they are Jeff’s daughters. Not just because they lived it. But because they genuinely have what it takes.
They have the look.
They have the personality.
They have the confidence.
And most importantly, they have a natural presence that cameras respond to.
Both Jessica and Kayla are already incredibly comfortable in front of a camera. They are social media experts, they understand how to present themselves, they know how to connect, and they’ve spent years being seen, speaking, performing, and carrying themselves in a very natural and watchable way. For many people, stepping in front of a lens on a feature film can feel intimidating. For these two, it feels like a very natural extension of who they already are.
And let’s be honest — they’re also a little crazy in their own hilarious way.
That’s one of the things I love most about them.
They both have this energy, warmth and humour that makes them so uniquely watchable. There’s life in them. There’s mischief in them. There’s honesty in them. And in a film like FENECH, where we are not trying to create some polished, sanitised version of this family, that matters. We want the real spark. The real fun. The real emotion. The real personalities that make this family what it is.
Jessica and Kayla bring that in spades.
This film has always meant a great deal to me because, at its core, it is about family. It is about the people standing behind the champion. It is about what success costs. It is about what struggle does to a family, but also what love can hold together. And the Fenech family, in every sense, represents that.
Jeff has been one of the greatest assets this film could ever have. His support from day one has meant everything to me. But the truth is, you cannot tell Jeff’s story properly without understanding the family around him — and Jessica and Kayla are a huge part of that emotional truth.
So to have them now officially stepping in front of the camera to help tell their own story, and their father’s story, feels incredibly special.
It feels right.
It feels honest.
And it feels like exactly the kind of casting decision that makes this film different.
This is not just another sports film.
This is not just another boxing story.
This is a deeply personal story about one of Australia’s most iconic fighters and the family that stood beside him through everything life threw their way.
And now, two of the women who lived that life are stepping into the film to help us bring that truth to the screen.
So Jessica and Kayla — welcome to the team.
Even though, in many ways, you’ve been part of it longer than anyone.
We are incredibly proud to have you both involved, and I cannot wait for audiences to see the heart, humour, love and authenticity you will bring to this film.
Welcome to FENECH.
